Mid-Summer Report.

We have unplugged for the past month, and have spent all of our time having adventures and doing fun work. Week after week, we just sort of forgot to turn on our computer - and thus we missed many emails, and have no idea what is going on outside of our neighborhood - but we could not be happier.
The results look like this: We have now painted four rooms plus a hallway and stairwell in our home, and have been giving much TLC to our yard and plants. We have spent some quality time with our friends, had a billion cookouts, hiked up to High Falls at Dupont, towed the boys on a thousand wagon rides, had fun at Montreat, eaten way too much ice cream and hot dogs, and ran the Firecracker 5k. The above list makes it seem like we have been busy - but we have not done much of anything that we were not dying to do. I feel as happy and contented as I have felt in many years.

Avery has moved up to the Two year old class, and is so excited. He is talking nonstop now - and his personality is beautiful and so much fun to be around. He and Noah spent last night dancing for hours at a neighborhood barbecue. Our friend gave us a little guitar for Avery to play (thus saving my guitar for at least on more week) - and he adores it. He is growing up, and has the world by the tail right now. He constantly seeks adventure and fun, so spending time with Avery is pure joy these days.
And our Noah is in transition. This is his final week at preschool, and we all have mixed emotions about the next step in his life. His school has been a true nest for him to be nurtured and grow, and it has been a great blessing in our lives to have him there. So he leaves it with a heavy heart, but with equal parts excitement for more long summer days, and finally Kindergarten . . . the holy grail of childhood independence movements. It will be bittersweet to walk him down to his first day of big school. So change is the order of the day for him this summer - and he is doing his best. And we are so proud of him.

Jessica is doing great, and is not only in love with our boys more than ever right now - but feels so much love for our home. She seems like an animal that is back in her natural habitat for the first time in a while. She picks out paint colors, sits on the porch swing, and waters the flowers with pure joy and ease of mind. Physically, her body is not always been too accommodating this summer, but she has settled into a nice pace - and it does my heart well to see her so content.

So, we are still reading lots of new books, and listening to lots of new music - and are headed to Hilton Head for the annual family beach throwdown next week. So all is quiet on the Graham Front, and we are appreciating that truth more than can be written.

Burrito Bracket

Eating a ginormous burrito at El Farolito in San Francisco, 2004 I LOVE burritos.  It is a passion that I share with my brother, and we actively seek out a quality burrito in almost every place we visit (Jessica is more of a Fish Taco kind of gal, but she enjoys burritos as well).  My love affair began around the age of 18, in the parking lots of Phish shows - where I could find any number of amazing burritos, cooked up on a dirty Coleman stove.  I just loved the explosion of flavor (and surprise) that came with each burrito I ate in those years. One of the the first times I visited Asheville for a few days in college, I came across Rio Burrito, a now defunct burrito-specific shop on Biltmore Avenue.  I went there all the time, and got to know all the nice folk who worked there.  So, I was quite disappointed when they shut it down - so much so that I wrote about it here.   But when Mamacitas opened in downtown Asheville in Spring 2004, I was smitten...

Im 30....seriously.

I am turning 30 today. So in the spirit of reflecting on these first 30 years of living, I am starting this blog. So, to begin - I shall update my status in life (this sounds complicated, so I will just try this in "list form."): Noah = greatest thing that ever happened to me. having a child was like an act of god, immediatly enacting a revolution on my perspective. Everyone tells you that " it is going to change everything." But I think I internalized that in a way that seemed to say ... things outside of me would change ie: schedules, sleeping, finaces, etc. Those things do change. But I did not accept that it would be ME that would go through the most profound changes. What I mean is, that the world itself has not shifted, but my view of that world (like Picasso in his Cubist period) has been transformed. It has been a traumatic shift for me, but in a beautiful way. Stop everything. "Icky Thump" by the White Stripes just came on the ipod. Sweet Jesus t...
