I am turning 30 today. So in the spirit of reflecting on these first 30 years of living, I am starting this blog. So, to begin - I shall update my status in life (this sounds complicated, so I will just try this in "list form."):
Noah = greatest thing that ever happened to me. having a child was like an act of god, immediatly enacting a revolution on my perspective. Everyone tells you that " it is going to change everything." But I think I internalized that in a way that seemed to say ... things outside of me would change ie: schedules, sleeping, finaces, etc.
Those things do change. But I did not accept that it would be ME that would go through the most profound changes. What I mean is, that the world itself has not shifted, but my view of that world (like Picasso in his Cubist period) has been transformed. It has been a traumatic shift for me, but in a beautiful way.
Stop everything. "Icky Thump" by the White Stripes just came on the ipod. Sweet Jesus that is some amazing rock n roll. . .
Jessica = my soulmate and love. As was said in "Lost in Translation," (an amazing movie. if you haven't seen it, I highly recommend picking up a copy...so choice) Having kids makes everything more complicated. That , i belive is also true of our relationship. But in this sense, "complicated" is growth and reward. I love her more than life itself. You know that you love something mopre than yourself when you look back and realize that you sacrificed, without being aware of it.
Teaching = I feel guilty at least 10 times a day, b/c I feel that I am just a lucky bastard. I had a great childhood, and somehow found a career that often times seems custom-made for me. I love my students like they are my own. I love discussing, arguing, teaching, and learning about the history of people - and what makes us us. I mean - did you know that the Mongols invented the Passport to ensure peace and protection for travellers? They also drank horseblood before battle. How cool is that? This is a fun job.
Alright. So Im 30. I appreciate the fact that in the time it took me to write this, Ryan Adams has probably recorded four records. . . and they are all good. I am getting closer to beleiving that Socialism is a better model than our present situation. I have a blog. I drink too much coffee. I am messy. I eat an apple (or banana) a day. I HAVE to pull for the Deacs. I wear too much blue. I can accept this.
