This school year has been an amazing experience for Avery. He has a free-spirited/like-minded teacher who is such an inspiration to Avery. In class, he is writing stories daily - and is rewarded for his creativity. He is suddenly interested in reading books - and he played the part of a pig in a short film that the class made recently. They also studied the book "The Man Who Walked Between the Towers," - a book that tells the magical story of tightrope walker Philippe Petit, who completed a walk between the two towers of the World Trade Center in 1974.
Since learning about Philippe Petit, Avery has continuously asked more and more questions about his daring feat - and has even taken to making short stop motion films of his own about him - using legos to tell his story. So, this weekend we all went to see the new feature film The Walk - about Petit and his famous walk. It was a magical experience to watch Avery watch this whimsical, and fantastic film. And I felt emotional and inspired (as well as scared out of my mind, as I am afraid of heights...) to be able to witness the power of art over my children.
Years ago, Jessica and I were lucky enough to hear (one of my favorite writers of all time) Sarah Vowell speak. In her talk she spoke about the importance of witnessing talented people do things at which they excel. From a professional ballerina, to an NFL running back, to a welder, to a poet - we need to be amazed. We need to be reminded that greatness is within reach.
We all got a reminder yesterday in the movie theater...and wide-eyed Avery led the way.
Here's to watching humans do things at which they excel.
