Nashville {Dumb Rock Songs, Soccer Goals, Tacos}

We went to our first ever Manchester City soccer match this past weekend, in Nashville, TN.    When Manchester City (specifically Raheem Sterling) scored a breakaway goal, the crowd of 55,000  + emitted a massive collective cheer.  As Sterling ran to celebrate, the opening sounds of Oasis' Rock n Roll Star began booming in the stadium.  All of sudden, at that very moment, I was emotional, and I didn't try to hide it.  I guess the word would be cathartic...

Because of rock music, the city of Manchester has always held a special place in my heart, ever since I bought my first CD ever - Some Friendly, by Manchester's Charlatans UK.  From there, I became obsessed with other Manchester bands - namely the Stone Roses, and while in high school - Oasis.  It was through my early obsession with Oasis that I discovered Manchester City FC.

My love of rock n roll music and soccer has only deepened over time - so seeing my first Manchester City game in person, and hearing Oasis, together in a stadium in Nashville, TN was a bit overwhelming for me. I was most grateful to be there with my family, but specifically with Jessica - who may be the only other person on earth who knew that the moment may be too much for me. She has walked with me through these obsessions for almost 20 years.  So it was such a comfort to see her nodding in understanding as I teared up...over a soccer goal and a dumb rock song.

But that is the nature of this thing called life, isn't it?  Feeling emotional highs and lows due to experiences that none of us can explain.  So, I didn't fight it.  Instead, I took a deep dive into the very  feeling that makes no sense to me - and it was pretty glorious.  And it felt so alive.

So though my family indulged me (and Avery) with this trip to Nashville to see Man City - we decided to make a fun trip out of it for the whole crew.  We spent the remainder of the weekend exploring what Music City has to offer, which included A LOT of tacos (Jessica's first love), massive geek outs at the full sized Parthenon, the amazing Hatch Show Prints (where Jessica got to scratch her letterpress itch), and Jack White's Third Man Records (a record store, vintage flea market, record company, & antique store - all in one!) - a place that our whole family listed as a highlight of the trip.  They even let us hold Jack White's Grammy awards...

And now we are home, and the kids are at their respective camps (Soccer and Montreat). And I am feeling grateful as hell that I can still be surprised by life, at every turn.

Im 30....seriously.

I am turning 30 today. So in the spirit of reflecting on these first 30 years of living, I am starting this blog. So, to begin - I shall update my status in life (this sounds complicated, so I will just try this in "list form."): Noah = greatest thing that ever happened to me. having a child was like an act of god, immediatly enacting a revolution on my perspective. Everyone tells you that " it is going to change everything." But I think I internalized that in a way that seemed to say ... things outside of me would change ie: schedules, sleeping, finaces, etc. Those things do change. But I did not accept that it would be ME that would go through the most profound changes. What I mean is, that the world itself has not shifted, but my view of that world (like Picasso in his Cubist period) has been transformed.
