This past weekend, Avery played in the NCYSA Showcase soccer tournament in High Point. This also happened to be on the same weekend that my nephew Sam, ran in the regional high school cross country meet. The fact that these two events fell on the same weekend, just 8 miles away from each other was incredible - and almost all of our family members (who live locally) showed up to support both of these kids as they competed (My sister even made a sign just for Avery!).It all came together.
It’s true that for better and for worse so much of our family's life has often revolved around sporting events. (Most of this is due to my Dad's passionate fandom of the Deacons, but my brother and I were equally invested in sports, and soccer remains a crucial part of my life even today). And growing up, this was sometimes disappointing for me, as I wanted my family to love music, and theater, and to travel more. But now it is settled, and we must accept that sports have been the sinlge largest unifying thread throughout our family history. So I guess this past weekend was actually quite fitting, that the universe once again brought us together around a soccer field, and a race. With the important part being that we were together, and our kids felt that they were part of something larger than themselves, both in the past and this weekend.
And man was it awesome!
