Superfriends, Exhaustion, and a New Adventure.

We are seriously worn out these days. Noah has a pretty serious cough going on, which is limiting his sleep - which translates to sometimes challenging afternoons. But generally, he is very agreeable, and is enjoying his new love affair with the "Superfriends." Do you remember the Hanna-Barbera Superfriends cartoon form the late 1970s/early 1980s? Noah picked it out at Barnes and Noble last weekend, and is now all about Superman, Batman, Robin, Green Lantern, Wonderwoman, Hawkman, and Aquaman. And, I am enjoying the shows as well, as they are so old school, and straight up hilarious. We have been watching too much Superfriends lately, as it has been too cold to play outside, the Superfiends are addictive, and as previously mentioned - we are tired.
Jessica is in the middle of the tsunami that is 8th/9th grade registration. She is tired from being so pregnant, stressed about registration, and anxious to have everything done in time for the baby. We do have his nursery looking pretty sharp, if I do say so myself. Jessica and Melissa (her sister) even painted some sweet looking airplanes and clouds on the wall. I am not as stressed as everyone else, but I am in a constant state of acceleration at school. I am planning on missing a week of class, when the baby is born - but the great state of North Carolina is not exactly receptive to my not teaching the last 30 years of American history - ergo, I have to try and get one week ahead in content before March 19. So far, it is working out, but this pace does not lend itself to relaxing days of teaching.
We are lucky enough to have a diaper shower tonight at La Paz. All of the guys in the history department are throwing it for us, and we are gracious for it. It ought to be much fun, as these are all good people, and we love La Paz.
We are crazy excited about meeting our new addition soon, but do wish that we could bank some sleep before then. :) In addition, we have done the requisite "clearing the calendar" for the next few months. But in the last few weeks, we have bought tickets to see Band of Horses at the Orange Peel (who are one of my favorite bands...period) in June, and Coldplay in Charlotte, in August.
I feel like a great adventure is about to begin, and we are most likely not prepared for everything - but then again, if we were prepared for everything - it would not be an adventure, now would it? And we would not be very "Superfriend - like" if we turned out backs on an adventure, now would we? See you at the Hall of Justice.

Burrito Bracket

Eating a ginormous burrito at El Farolito in San Francisco, 2004 I LOVE burritos.  It is a passion that I share with my brother, and we actively seek out a quality burrito in almost every place we visit (Jessica is more of a Fish Taco kind of gal, but she enjoys burritos as well).  My love affair began around the age of 18, in the parking lots of Phish shows - where I could find any number of amazing burritos, cooked up on a dirty Coleman stove.  I just loved the explosion of flavor (and surprise) that came with each burrito I ate in those years. One of the the first times I visited Asheville for a few days in college, I came across Rio Burrito, a now defunct burrito-specific shop on Biltmore Avenue.  I went there all the time, and got to know all the nice folk who worked there.  So, I was quite disappointed when they shut it down - so much so that I wrote about it here.   But when Mamacitas opened in downtown Asheville in Spring 2004, I was smitten...

Im 30....seriously.

I am turning 30 today. So in the spirit of reflecting on these first 30 years of living, I am starting this blog. So, to begin - I shall update my status in life (this sounds complicated, so I will just try this in "list form."): Noah = greatest thing that ever happened to me. having a child was like an act of god, immediatly enacting a revolution on my perspective. Everyone tells you that " it is going to change everything." But I think I internalized that in a way that seemed to say ... things outside of me would change ie: schedules, sleeping, finaces, etc. Those things do change. But I did not accept that it would be ME that would go through the most profound changes. What I mean is, that the world itself has not shifted, but my view of that world (like Picasso in his Cubist period) has been transformed. It has been a traumatic shift for me, but in a beautiful way. Stop everything. "Icky Thump" by the White Stripes just came on the ipod. Sweet Jesus t...
