Dude. I am straight up tired. This thing of having two kids is amazing, but will wear ya down
from time to time, ya know? We had a four day mini-vacation in Winston-Salem: seeing the fam, and the like. We went and saw my cousin Jason, who was in town from California - and his girlfriend Miranda, and their four month old, Ethan. It was great to see them, and hang out. Noah ran at 75 mph with his cousin, Sam, for the entire time we were there. Noah and Sam even discovered a baby possum in the driveway. It was a HUGE deal. After a day full of travel, it was a later than usual night - so the next day we showed signs of weariness.
But on Friday we met our good friends Leah and Rich at Reynolda, and had a great time. Leah is seriously one of the funniest people I know, and Rich is right there with her. So, a good time was enjoyed by all. Leah and Jessica took pictures of themselves looking ridiculous, as always. We happened to walk into some little Fourth of July festivities, so Noah demanded to have a "big purple castle painted on my face. . .with orange and green on it." After the aforementioned castle request was fulfilled - Noah and I entered the sack race. I had it won, until I inexplicably fell down near the finish. Noah maintained a quick pace, and emerged the victor.
We celebrated the Fourth at my brother Matt's house. We cooked out, shot off some pretty serious firecrackers, and just had a grand time. Jay (Matt's neighbor) had made a run to South Carolina, so Noah and the boys were treated to a quality display of pyrotechnics. Thank God for the dominant influence of the Song Dynasty to China's mercantile might throughout the 11th Century - which led to a rise of innovation in urban centers - which gave us gunpowder. For without that, we would not have enjoyed such an amazing display of fireworks. :)
Noah is in the midst of round two of his summer swim lessons, and he is still enjoying it. And though he has been doing it for some time, he has decided that going underwater is a bit scary. We understand, though we find it ironic that he developed this fear while in his swim lessons, as opposed to a specifically bad experience in the water. But to know Noah is to know that he does things on his own time. And he does not care what the other kids are doing. Typically, he marches to his own drum, and it makes me so proud. But it is hard for me to watch him develop fears. I either want to interfere to help, or just will him past it. But I do realize that fears are a necessary part of his path, and that overcoming them is where we gain meaning.
