Holiday Traditions.

We have returned from our Thanksgiving travels. We could be found in the rural haunts of Waxhaw, NC, and then in Charlotte for a few days. We had a good time, but dude, holiday travel is straight up exhausting, huh? The traffic, the packing, fighting for naps, etc. can certainly wear on all of us, and this trip was no exception. It was great to see all of Jessica's family and spend some quality time though. And Noah partied like a rockstar all week, so that was cool. We got stuck in a massive traffic jam on I-85 (Thanks Ike!) on the way home, and got to navigate a more scenic route to the mountains - which I LOVE to do. Jessica is a fine navigator/wingwoman (a Wedge Antilles to my Luke Skywalker, or a Goose to my Maverick - if you will), and we survived the ordeal.
We were all excited to be back home. Noah slept like no one's business, and we are now back in the general groove that is our weekly life. We have been doing quite a bit of Christmas shopping lately, and for the first time in a while I have really been enjoying it. I am having so much fun shopping for my nephews and Noah. Anyways, while at Mast General Store I noticed that they were selling Moravian stars for the outside of one's house. Before leaving for college, I had never spent a Christmas season without a Moravian star hanging above my front door. Now I have spent over ten years without one on my own house. We remedied that last night by buying, putting together, and hanging our first Moravian star on the front porch of our new house. Once we turned off the lights, and stood in the front yard looking at it, I had an incredible feeling of nostalgia/satisfaction. It honestly made me think of the fact that we have built our own home. But we constructed it on a foundation that was laid before us. The star reminded me of my past, and of my future. Never underestimate the power of symbols.
On another note, I am (embrassingly) addicted to that song "(I'm Not Gonna Write You a) Love Song" by Sara Bareilles. They play it on the radio constantly, but it is undeniable. I am still a sucker for a some cheeky pop music. Aside from that - I need some new music... fast. I am bored with everything I own right now. This is a cry for help. Suggestions?

I think I like "Women".... or is it just that it makes for an interesting statement? I heard 'em once but have yet to seek out more of them but I really liked what I heard! I'm refraining from comments about your trip to Charlotte. Holiday travel does suck so that makes for a valid excuse but one of these days our kids will meet!

Burrito Bracket

Eating a ginormous burrito at El Farolito in San Francisco, 2004 I LOVE burritos.  It is a passion that I share with my brother, and we actively seek out a quality burrito in almost every place we visit (Jessica is more of a Fish Taco kind of gal, but she enjoys burritos as well).  My love affair began around the age of 18, in the parking lots of Phish shows - where I could find any number of amazing burritos, cooked up on a dirty Coleman stove.  I just loved the explosion of flavor (and surprise) that came with each burrito I ate in those years. One of the the first times I visited Asheville for a few days in college, I came across Rio Burrito, a now defunct burrito-specific shop on Biltmore Avenue.  I went there all the time, and got to know all the nice folk who worked there.  So, I was quite disappointed when they shut it down - so much so that I wrote about it here.   But when Mamacitas opened in downtown Asheville in Spring 2004, I was smitten...

Im 30....seriously.

I am turning 30 today. So in the spirit of reflecting on these first 30 years of living, I am starting this blog. So, to begin - I shall update my status in life (this sounds complicated, so I will just try this in "list form."): Noah = greatest thing that ever happened to me. having a child was like an act of god, immediatly enacting a revolution on my perspective. Everyone tells you that " it is going to change everything." But I think I internalized that in a way that seemed to say ... things outside of me would change ie: schedules, sleeping, finaces, etc. Those things do change. But I did not accept that it would be ME that would go through the most profound changes. What I mean is, that the world itself has not shifted, but my view of that world (like Picasso in his Cubist period) has been transformed. It has been a traumatic shift for me, but in a beautiful way. Stop everything. "Icky Thump" by the White Stripes just came on the ipod. Sweet Jesus t...
