I am a music nerd, plain and simple. I love knowing everything about the music I love - and I credit music, and growing up in Winston-Salem, for teaching me how to love history. My brother, Matt is the same way - and still to this day the subject of music dominates about 80% of our conversations (though that percentage decreases sharply during Wake Forest's football/basketball seasons, especially when they fumble in overtime, in a near certain win, over BC this past Saturday...geez).And if you know me, or have read any aspect of this blog before - you are aware that the band Superchunk has played an important role in my world of music. My good friend, Kylie, introduced me to Superchunk sometime around 1992. She made me a mixtape and it had "Precision Auto" on it. I was hooked. Over the next several years, I went on to obtain virtually everything the band ever put out. I lied, stole, and purchased virtually anything Superchunk. And, as time went by, I began to expand my interest in their record label, Merge Records. I got into Spoon, Teenage Fanclub, Camera Obscura, Broken West, Arcade Fire, M. Ward, and Conor Oberst. So, when I recently learned that their was abook coming out entitled "Our Noise: The Story of Merge Records." I was just a little excited. So, I preordered it, devoured it in two days - and just found out that Mac and Laura (Guitarist and Bassist for Superchunk - as well as the founders of Merge Records) are coming to Malaprop's Bookstore, in Asheville this Friday (October 2) to do a reading, and play some tunes - I physically exploded. Jessica shares my love and passion for the 'Chunk, and as point of fact - one of the first times that we (think we) spoke was at a free Superchunk show in the Cone Ballroom at UNCG. That's right - UNCG paid Superchunk to come play for us. Go Spartans.
