In The Throes...

"In the Throes. . ." has become my most commonly uttered phrase over the past couple of months. We have a 7 month old, and a toddler, and school is insane in the fall. So, things are crazy presently, but they are going to get less crazy over the course of this year - so I have to be careful to appreciate and enjoy what is happening now - and not get too caught up in looking for Avery's increased independence, or a more monotonous school schedule.

Here is what is up: School is crazy busy for both Jessica and myself. And, it being the Fall semester, there have been plenty of after-school obligations for both of us, including the requisite: faculty meetings, School Improvement Committees, soccer practices, Advisory Council meetings, Board Meetings, Human Rights Club meetings, etc. All of this is keeping our schedules pretty jammed up, but I have managaed to have some mad fun at school lately, with the charity mohawk and all - which I just buzzed off yesterday (it was time to ditch the mohawk, as it had lost all shock value among the kids at school, and Noah hated it from the start..it freaked him out).

And, the boys are fine, but Avery has basically had a cough for two months - that is not a bad one, but it does wake him up all the time - which wakes us up all the time. Noah is happy, but seems to be noticing that we are all busy, so he (understandably) desires more individualized time with each of us. We are working hard to accomodate him.

So, we are in one of those moments in our lives where we are getting up in the morning, downing some java, and giving it all that we have all day. We are eating for fuel alone, and sleeping little. But we are still managing to have some really great days with each other. This past weekend, it was really cold. So, inside activities were needed. We all went to Target, and Barnes and Noble, to get a random assortment of stuff - and we just had the best time. We played in the Halloween section forever, then we got blue smoothies, read some books, and scavenged for the the items on our list. We were all in a great mood, and probably a little slap-happy from a lack of true rest. But, it is cool. We have been in a similar position before, and it passes. And, we will come out better, and more fulfilled individuals. But at present, it is fair to say that we are... in the throes.

Burrito Bracket

Eating a ginormous burrito at El Farolito in San Francisco, 2004 I LOVE burritos.  It is a passion that I share with my brother, and we actively seek out a quality burrito in almost every place we visit (Jessica is more of a Fish Taco kind of gal, but she enjoys burritos as well).  My love affair began around the age of 18, in the parking lots of Phish shows - where I could find any number of amazing burritos, cooked up on a dirty Coleman stove.  I just loved the explosion of flavor (and surprise) that came with each burrito I ate in those years. One of the the first times I visited Asheville for a few days in college, I came across Rio Burrito, a now defunct burrito-specific shop on Biltmore Avenue.  I went there all the time, and got to know all the nice folk who worked there.  So, I was quite disappointed when they shut it down - so much so that I wrote about it here.   But when Mamacitas opened in downtown Asheville in Spring 2004, I was smitten...

Im 30....seriously.

I am turning 30 today. So in the spirit of reflecting on these first 30 years of living, I am starting this blog. So, to begin - I shall update my status in life (this sounds complicated, so I will just try this in "list form."): Noah = greatest thing that ever happened to me. having a child was like an act of god, immediatly enacting a revolution on my perspective. Everyone tells you that " it is going to change everything." But I think I internalized that in a way that seemed to say ... things outside of me would change ie: schedules, sleeping, finaces, etc. Those things do change. But I did not accept that it would be ME that would go through the most profound changes. What I mean is, that the world itself has not shifted, but my view of that world (like Picasso in his Cubist period) has been transformed. It has been a traumatic shift for me, but in a beautiful way. Stop everything. "Icky Thump" by the White Stripes just came on the ipod. Sweet Jesus t...
