New Tricks for Avery.

So, last weekend was warm enough to spend time out doors - which is always a welcome treat in the winter.  We took full advantage of the spring-like days - going on hikes, running around, and going to the park to ride bikes and skateboards.  Noah is liking this bike riding thing more and more, and he is getting the hang of it.  Our neighborhood is pretty steep, so he does not have the most ideal area in which to learn.  But we have been able to work in enough visits to the park, that he seems to grasp the concept of bicycling. As you can see in this pic, he was enjoying himself on thsi particular day, as I chased him on the longboard - fun for both of us.  We hope to get him on his bike (aka the Road Warrior) even more this Spring and summer, in prep for Hilton head - which is bicycle paradise.
And our sweet little Avery is getting tubes in his ears this Wednesday, and is still fighting through an ear infection.  Noah had tubes as well, and the results were nothing short of magical, as far as how much better he seemed to feel.  So, we are certainly hoping that Avery is going to feel like a million bucks when this thing is through.  Neither Jessica nor I am looking forward to the doctor taking him away from us though, even if it is only for 15 minutes .  In related news, Avery has started to pull up and is crawling around now.  His crawl is pretty hilarious, as he generally uses his hands and one knee to propel his body forward.  The thing is, he is really, really, really excited about his newfound ability to grab anything he desires.  We were in no hurry to see him locomote, but to see him so happy is beautiful.   These boys just make my life so much better than it has ever been.  I was thinking recently how I know for a fact that these are the "glory years" of our parenthood, as it were.  I can actually feel that each day, when all four of us are playing, singing, and hanging out together.  And as always, I feel that gravitational pull to hang on to these moments as much as humanly possible.  In order to reconcile these feelings, I think Jessica and I just try to document everything that is happening.  We take a bunch of pictures, write this blog, pack away things of note.  Either way, we are lucky bastards, for sure.

Burrito Bracket

Eating a ginormous burrito at El Farolito in San Francisco, 2004 I LOVE burritos.  It is a passion that I share with my brother, and we actively seek out a quality burrito in almost every place we visit (Jessica is more of a Fish Taco kind of gal, but she enjoys burritos as well).  My love affair began around the age of 18, in the parking lots of Phish shows - where I could find any number of amazing burritos, cooked up on a dirty Coleman stove.  I just loved the explosion of flavor (and surprise) that came with each burrito I ate in those years. One of the the first times I visited Asheville for a few days in college, I came across Rio Burrito, a now defunct burrito-specific shop on Biltmore Avenue.  I went there all the time, and got to know all the nice folk who worked there.  So, I was quite disappointed when they shut it down - so much so that I wrote about it here.   But when Mamacitas opened in downtown Asheville in Spring 2004, I was smitten...

Im 30....seriously.

I am turning 30 today. So in the spirit of reflecting on these first 30 years of living, I am starting this blog. So, to begin - I shall update my status in life (this sounds complicated, so I will just try this in "list form."): Noah = greatest thing that ever happened to me. having a child was like an act of god, immediatly enacting a revolution on my perspective. Everyone tells you that " it is going to change everything." But I think I internalized that in a way that seemed to say ... things outside of me would change ie: schedules, sleeping, finaces, etc. Those things do change. But I did not accept that it would be ME that would go through the most profound changes. What I mean is, that the world itself has not shifted, but my view of that world (like Picasso in his Cubist period) has been transformed. It has been a traumatic shift for me, but in a beautiful way. Stop everything. "Icky Thump" by the White Stripes just came on the ipod. Sweet Jesus t...
