The NC Holiday Tour is at an End.

Okay so our holidays have come to an end. We had a great Christmas, with Noah experiencing the overwhelming morning that is Santa Claus. It was beautiful to watch him attempt to take it all in. He took his time, but most enjoyed his new play-dough set. He most likes to make the penguins with it. (Whenever one of his toys stops working, Noah says, "Daddy fix!" This is hilarious if you know my history with repair attempts. But it is humbling and it makes me feel good.) We then took our annual holiday tour of the western half of North Carolina (The Rip Van Winkle state as it is sometimes known). We travelled to Winston-Salem and stayed for three days. We really had a great time there - seeing all of the family, watching them spoil the hell out of Noah, taking down smoothies from the Juice Shop, and just hanging out. Each evening, my mom always lays out magazines and a blanket for Jessica in her favorite chair. It is really sweet. From there, we ventured to Charlotte to see Jessica's family. Jessica met up with some of her high school friends on friday night, while I stayed with Noah. We traded on Saturday as I (with my family) attended the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Bank of America Stadium. (Yes, Wake was playing in it - and Yes - Wake won.) What was really cool was taking the Light Rail from Jessica's Mom's house in South Charlotte in to uptown for the game. I am a huge fan of mass transit, both in principle and experience. Charlotte's mass transit delivers. Noah's Aunt Mel Mel was sorely missed.
We finally returned home on Sunday and began to sort through the presents, food, and other accumulated stuff. We were tired. But, then it snowed! Yay! We got about 2 inches at our house, and have been out of school all week. We were unable to play much outside because of the various illnesses through which we have all three been navigating. So it goes.
We are overwhelmingly gracious for the holidays and our families, but looking forward to staying at home for a while. This arctic blast of air has made it dreadfully cold here lately, prompting us to rejoin the YMCA last week. It is nice to go running without worrying about the 14 degree temps outside. And we are looking forward to getting Noah back in the pool.

Burrito Bracket

Eating a ginormous burrito at El Farolito in San Francisco, 2004 I LOVE burritos.  It is a passion that I share with my brother, and we actively seek out a quality burrito in almost every place we visit (Jessica is more of a Fish Taco kind of gal, but she enjoys burritos as well).  My love affair began around the age of 18, in the parking lots of Phish shows - where I could find any number of amazing burritos, cooked up on a dirty Coleman stove.  I just loved the explosion of flavor (and surprise) that came with each burrito I ate in those years. One of the the first times I visited Asheville for a few days in college, I came across Rio Burrito, a now defunct burrito-specific shop on Biltmore Avenue.  I went there all the time, and got to know all the nice folk who worked there.  So, I was quite disappointed when they shut it down - so much so that I wrote about it here.   But when Mamacitas opened in downtown Asheville in Spring 2004, I was smitten...

Im 30....seriously.

I am turning 30 today. So in the spirit of reflecting on these first 30 years of living, I am starting this blog. So, to begin - I shall update my status in life (this sounds complicated, so I will just try this in "list form."): Noah = greatest thing that ever happened to me. having a child was like an act of god, immediatly enacting a revolution on my perspective. Everyone tells you that " it is going to change everything." But I think I internalized that in a way that seemed to say ... things outside of me would change ie: schedules, sleeping, finaces, etc. Those things do change. But I did not accept that it would be ME that would go through the most profound changes. What I mean is, that the world itself has not shifted, but my view of that world (like Picasso in his Cubist period) has been transformed. It has been a traumatic shift for me, but in a beautiful way. Stop everything. "Icky Thump" by the White Stripes just came on the ipod. Sweet Jesus t...
