The Funk v/s Montreat

I was thinking about writing a blogpost all about how out-of-sorts I have been feeling lately. But then, we went down to Montreat today (for the hundrenth time this summer) and I feel great again. Let me explain:

You see, Thursday night we noticed these little purple spots on Avery's left leg. The spots were not bumbs or a rash. They appeared to be under the skin and had a strange look to them. As it was around 7:00pm, we called the after hours nurse for our pediatrician, to make sure this was nothing about which to be concerned. I called and spoke with the nurse, and she immediately told me to take him to the Emergency Room. Aside from these spots, he was acting totally normal - so I was a bit surprised to hear her say that. But, we do what we are told by the medical experts. We put Noah to bed, called our (life saving) neighbor, Tim to hang out until we returned - and headed to Mission Hospital Emergency. It took four crazy anxious hours of poking, prodding, demanding payments, executing blood tests, and asking questions for us to find out that it "was nothing to worry about, and to go see your pediatrician tomorrow just to check in." We were so happy to hear that Avery was okay that we did not give a shit about all of the other (above) silliness that comes with any Emergency Room visit. So, he is fine and we are fine, and better safe than sorry. But damn it was scary. Really scary.

Noah has just finished his first session of swim lessons this Friday. After our hospital visit I was admittedly not stoked to go to the family swim lesson party-thing that they have to celebrate the end of the class, but Noah and I could not miss it. He loved his swim lessons, and had a great time. He charmed his teacher, Ms. Amy, so much that she said "his smile will talk me out of anything." Translation = Noah only had to do what Noah wanted to do. He is a funny kid, but has been in a real funk lately. I do not know why, and have stopped guessing - but every so often Noah will get in this mood where he scares easily, gets clingy to us, will not nap, and is really grumpy around other kids. It drives Jessica and I completely crazy. He finished up the last few days of swim lessons in this funk, and seems to have pushed through and done well - but talked his way out of some of the more challenging exercises, for sure. So it goes.

So, with all of the above going on in the last few days - I was feeling out of my mind by yesterday. I was tired, fickle, unmotivated, and completely impatient. To make it worse, Jessica was crazy tired, Noah was in his funk, Avery is only 3 months old, and out cat is always psychotic. So, it was in this mood that I thought, "I need to write a post about feeling terrible, to get me out of this." But I was unmotivated to write.

So, we went to Montreat today with all of our neighbors - and BAM! I was out of my funk, and so was Noah! I love Montreat. It does true wonders for my soul. We just go and wade and splash in the creek, walk on rocks, go down slides, take walks, and picnic. We had a great time today, and I feel refreshed and recharged. The neighborhood kis had a great time too - check out the pic.

Burrito Bracket

Eating a ginormous burrito at El Farolito in San Francisco, 2004 I LOVE burritos.  It is a passion that I share with my brother, and we actively seek out a quality burrito in almost every place we visit (Jessica is more of a Fish Taco kind of gal, but she enjoys burritos as well).  My love affair began around the age of 18, in the parking lots of Phish shows - where I could find any number of amazing burritos, cooked up on a dirty Coleman stove.  I just loved the explosion of flavor (and surprise) that came with each burrito I ate in those years. One of the the first times I visited Asheville for a few days in college, I came across Rio Burrito, a now defunct burrito-specific shop on Biltmore Avenue.  I went there all the time, and got to know all the nice folk who worked there.  So, I was quite disappointed when they shut it down - so much so that I wrote about it here.   But when Mamacitas opened in downtown Asheville in Spring 2004, I was smitten...

Im 30....seriously.

I am turning 30 today. So in the spirit of reflecting on these first 30 years of living, I am starting this blog. So, to begin - I shall update my status in life (this sounds complicated, so I will just try this in "list form."): Noah = greatest thing that ever happened to me. having a child was like an act of god, immediatly enacting a revolution on my perspective. Everyone tells you that " it is going to change everything." But I think I internalized that in a way that seemed to say ... things outside of me would change ie: schedules, sleeping, finaces, etc. Those things do change. But I did not accept that it would be ME that would go through the most profound changes. What I mean is, that the world itself has not shifted, but my view of that world (like Picasso in his Cubist period) has been transformed. It has been a traumatic shift for me, but in a beautiful way. Stop everything. "Icky Thump" by the White Stripes just came on the ipod. Sweet Jesus t...
