Be Present {One Day at a Time}

I am not too big on New Years resolutions, but Jessica recently asked me if I had a word for the year. I do not have a single word that will hopefully drive my thinking, but I do have two: Be Present.

Long distance runners have a saying that encourages folks to "run the mile you are in."  Basically, I have learned enough about myself to know that I am most healthy (both personally and spiritually) when I take life in small bites. When I am actually running, or just waking up in the morning - smaller is better.  Long term goals continue to play an important role for me, as far as marking my progress and tracking my path - like mileposts.  But I am happiest when I take it one day at a time, and surrender most of my control to the world.  I hope that this next year will see my life in smaller steps.

I have enjoyed reflecting on 2013, and how my life changed in those twelve months.  Mostly, the year was full of balancing forces at work.  Our extended family struggled with Jennifer's cancer diagnosis, as well as my Dad's ongoing struggle with dementia.  On the flip side, My family has grown closer than ever, and Jessica's sister gave birth to a beautiful baby boy (which led to our longest, successful, family road trip ever, to Ohio).

And yet I feel like it was a wonderful and fulfilling year for my immediate family. All of us followed our passions, and learned a lot about ourselves and each other.  We avoided major health issues, and embarked on too many adventures to count.  Yep - campouts, roadtrips, hikes, bikes, and swims were the order of the day last year. From Yosemite to Ohio to Montreat - we sucked the marrow from life's bone.  We aim to be adventurers, and we lived into it.  And we learned that we thrive in new experiences, and that adventuring together is always our best medicine.  To that end, we even tried to tailor our Christmas gifts to incite adventure, rather than the collection of "things," including new ENO hammocks and an annual pass to the Biltmore Estate.

So, 2013 was a great year of learning and growing.  I don't think I could ask for much more.  I am grateful for it.  But I am ready to wrap it up and put it away as well.

Onward to more adventures.

Burrito Bracket

Eating a ginormous burrito at El Farolito in San Francisco, 2004 I LOVE burritos.  It is a passion that I share with my brother, and we actively seek out a quality burrito in almost every place we visit (Jessica is more of a Fish Taco kind of gal, but she enjoys burritos as well).  My love affair began around the age of 18, in the parking lots of Phish shows - where I could find any number of amazing burritos, cooked up on a dirty Coleman stove.  I just loved the explosion of flavor (and surprise) that came with each burrito I ate in those years. One of the the first times I visited Asheville for a few days in college, I came across Rio Burrito, a now defunct burrito-specific shop on Biltmore Avenue.  I went there all the time, and got to know all the nice folk who worked there.  So, I was quite disappointed when they shut it down - so much so that I wrote about it here.   But when Mamacitas opened in downtown Asheville in Spring 2004, I was smitten...

Im 30....seriously.

I am turning 30 today. So in the spirit of reflecting on these first 30 years of living, I am starting this blog. So, to begin - I shall update my status in life (this sounds complicated, so I will just try this in "list form."): Noah = greatest thing that ever happened to me. having a child was like an act of god, immediatly enacting a revolution on my perspective. Everyone tells you that " it is going to change everything." But I think I internalized that in a way that seemed to say ... things outside of me would change ie: schedules, sleeping, finaces, etc. Those things do change. But I did not accept that it would be ME that would go through the most profound changes. What I mean is, that the world itself has not shifted, but my view of that world (like Picasso in his Cubist period) has been transformed. It has been a traumatic shift for me, but in a beautiful way. Stop everything. "Icky Thump" by the White Stripes just came on the ipod. Sweet Jesus t...
