Poop, Ear Infection, and The Road Warrior.

We broke even last week - a little yin/yang lesson.

First, we were greeted with the amazing news that Noah took a poo in the potty at school. Hell yes he did. Poop - in - the - potty! We want to potty all the time, potty all the time. He was excited too. He knew it was a big deal, this pooping thing. We are hoping for more poop in his future.

Then, Noah began to scream for two hours. He complained that his ear hurt. Our spirits sank, as we have lived through ear infections before and they are trying, to say the least. More pressing was the fact that our wonderful child was in pain, and we could not stop it. That is tough for parents to take. Eventually, the Motrin kicked in and he feel asleep in Jessica's lap. We made it to the doctor last night around 7:30, and he was feeling fine.

He is rocking an antibiotic now, and feels like a million bucks. We hit I-40 East to Winston-Salem to go to our nephew Sam's birthday party this weekend. It was Star Wars themed, complete with Matt and Jennifer dressing up as Padme and Vader. Noah had a great time eating the light saber cake (your heard me - a cake in the shape of two light sabers. The kids were not the only ones excited.), playing like he was a clone trooper, and admiring Sam's toy collection. Matt also hooked Noah up with a (virtually brand new) bike, that Sam outgrew some time back. It is green and is called the "Road Warrior." Noah has never shown any interest in learning how to pedal before, but the Road Warrior immediately changed that. He is pedaling like a Baghdad merchant baby!

I love that Noah gets hand-me-down stuff from his older cousin, Sam. I, being the third child of my family, lived on hand-me-downs. The funny thing is, I loved having things that my older siblings had already used. These items already had a rich history, and chances were good that I had already admired these things for sometime, and was thus excited to get my paws on them. Some of my favorite hand-me-downs included: Matt's KISS records, t-shirts, Atari games, Molly's walkman, my Dad's grey jacket, and matchbox cars. And now Noah has the Road Warrior.

Burrito Bracket

Eating a ginormous burrito at El Farolito in San Francisco, 2004 I LOVE burritos.  It is a passion that I share with my brother, and we actively seek out a quality burrito in almost every place we visit (Jessica is more of a Fish Taco kind of gal, but she enjoys burritos as well).  My love affair began around the age of 18, in the parking lots of Phish shows - where I could find any number of amazing burritos, cooked up on a dirty Coleman stove.  I just loved the explosion of flavor (and surprise) that came with each burrito I ate in those years. One of the the first times I visited Asheville for a few days in college, I came across Rio Burrito, a now defunct burrito-specific shop on Biltmore Avenue.  I went there all the time, and got to know all the nice folk who worked there.  So, I was quite disappointed when they shut it down - so much so that I wrote about it here.   But when Mamacitas opened in downtown Asheville in Spring 2004, I was smitten...

Im 30....seriously.

I am turning 30 today. So in the spirit of reflecting on these first 30 years of living, I am starting this blog. So, to begin - I shall update my status in life (this sounds complicated, so I will just try this in "list form."): Noah = greatest thing that ever happened to me. having a child was like an act of god, immediatly enacting a revolution on my perspective. Everyone tells you that " it is going to change everything." But I think I internalized that in a way that seemed to say ... things outside of me would change ie: schedules, sleeping, finaces, etc. Those things do change. But I did not accept that it would be ME that would go through the most profound changes. What I mean is, that the world itself has not shifted, but my view of that world (like Picasso in his Cubist period) has been transformed. It has been a traumatic shift for me, but in a beautiful way. Stop everything. "Icky Thump" by the White Stripes just came on the ipod. Sweet Jesus t...
