Wait a Second - Shouldn't School be Starting?

So my yearning to teach school has reached crescendo this week. It is easy for me to feel guilty for talking about my desire to be back in school 5 days a week, being that I love being with my family more than anything - and that is what I am most enjoying this summer. But the bottom line is this: To be at my best, I must be engaged in a creative project, and moving at an excited pace. Due to the constant interaction with wild kids, intellectual debates, community-building, planning, fire-fighting, grading, and trying ridiculous activities - teaching history fulfills this for me, and presently I feel like I am an addict looking for a fix.

This is nothing new. As happens every summer, I always catch up on my guitar playing, and usually write songs. But the problem with me is that I can not JUST write a song. Immediatly, I want to write parts for other instruments, form a band, make a record, and plan a few shows. And what is worse is that I do not want to to do this a few months from now - I want to do it TODAY. Usually, this is not feasible, so I play lots of kids songs and stuff, and supplement my brain with books. I catch up on my reading, and that usually fulfills something in me. . . until I read so much history that I have to talk to everyone about it, and that is simply punishment for my family.

This summer is also a little bit different, due to Avery. Lately, as great as he is - he is not sleeping well at all. Jessica is the lightest sleeper on the planet, and she awakes to his every sound or movement. So Jessica is not sleeping well - which means I am not sleeping too well either - which means our cat is not sleeping well either. So, the only person in our house who feels great, and is ready to paint the town red, is Noah. And he is three, so he has a bit of trouble understanding why we do not feel up to doing somersaults off of the couch at 7am. So, jessica and I are having trouble finding the time to get things accomplished around the house. Though understandable, this is frustrating to both of us, as the summer comes to a close.

But alas, we are still managing to have a lot of fun. We went to Asheville Pizza to see Charlotte's Web (The book that gave us Avery's name!) today with Noah's preschool class, and we are going to see Coldplay tommorow. So, things are good.

Burrito Bracket

Eating a ginormous burrito at El Farolito in San Francisco, 2004 I LOVE burritos.  It is a passion that I share with my brother, and we actively seek out a quality burrito in almost every place we visit (Jessica is more of a Fish Taco kind of gal, but she enjoys burritos as well).  My love affair began around the age of 18, in the parking lots of Phish shows - where I could find any number of amazing burritos, cooked up on a dirty Coleman stove.  I just loved the explosion of flavor (and surprise) that came with each burrito I ate in those years. One of the the first times I visited Asheville for a few days in college, I came across Rio Burrito, a now defunct burrito-specific shop on Biltmore Avenue.  I went there all the time, and got to know all the nice folk who worked there.  So, I was quite disappointed when they shut it down - so much so that I wrote about it here.   But when Mamacitas opened in downtown Asheville in Spring 2004, I was smitten...

Im 30....seriously.

I am turning 30 today. So in the spirit of reflecting on these first 30 years of living, I am starting this blog. So, to begin - I shall update my status in life (this sounds complicated, so I will just try this in "list form."): Noah = greatest thing that ever happened to me. having a child was like an act of god, immediatly enacting a revolution on my perspective. Everyone tells you that " it is going to change everything." But I think I internalized that in a way that seemed to say ... things outside of me would change ie: schedules, sleeping, finaces, etc. Those things do change. But I did not accept that it would be ME that would go through the most profound changes. What I mean is, that the world itself has not shifted, but my view of that world (like Picasso in his Cubist period) has been transformed. It has been a traumatic shift for me, but in a beautiful way. Stop everything. "Icky Thump" by the White Stripes just came on the ipod. Sweet Jesus t...
