Reading Books.

So, I am reading a lot of books lately. As part of our family's "simplifying our lives project," we turned off the TV. Don't get me wrong, we still watch television - just not nearly as much as we used to. We have had a TV in our bedroom for a while (as it was left over from our TV upgrade in the family room), but we have decided to give it away, and return to having only one TV in the house. We just believe that function truly follows the form - so we want to form our house with less television.

The boys still watch some cartoons in the mornings, but that usually is all they get per day (unless we hit an emergency situation where only Toy Story 3 will get us through:). And it being the beginning of March Madness, I will be guilty of taking in some basketball. But aside from that - we are all spening more quality time together. And everyone is happy about it. We spend more time on the floor, and play more games. We create more art, and (nowadays) we clean out and pack.

And as for Jessica and I - we read more books. It is not that we stopped reading, as we have always remained avid readers. But now we simply have more time to do it. We are consistently buying books again, and Jessica has joined a book club. I am revisiting Anne Lamott's catalogue, and enjoying some great fiction. Jessica just bought this new book called Organized Simplicity - which we are both excited about reading. Apparently, it is about beginning things intentionally, with the end in mind, by defining your family purpose. Then it provides some " how to" on "living simply." It sounds good - we'll see.

So we are constantly looking for new books to devour. What have you been reading lately?

I have been reading the books a friend has been sending me here- have you read Andersonville by MacKinlay Kantor? It's a Civil War novel about a Confederate prison. It's pretty good so far!
I hope you and the fam are doing great! It's very cool that you're moving to downtown Weaverville, hope the move goes smoothly for you. I'd be happy to come speak to a class or two when I get back, so long as I can use the phrase "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" more than is probably necessary.

Burrito Bracket

Eating a ginormous burrito at El Farolito in San Francisco, 2004 I LOVE burritos.  It is a passion that I share with my brother, and we actively seek out a quality burrito in almost every place we visit (Jessica is more of a Fish Taco kind of gal, but she enjoys burritos as well).  My love affair began around the age of 18, in the parking lots of Phish shows - where I could find any number of amazing burritos, cooked up on a dirty Coleman stove.  I just loved the explosion of flavor (and surprise) that came with each burrito I ate in those years. One of the the first times I visited Asheville for a few days in college, I came across Rio Burrito, a now defunct burrito-specific shop on Biltmore Avenue.  I went there all the time, and got to know all the nice folk who worked there.  So, I was quite disappointed when they shut it down - so much so that I wrote about it here.   But when Mamacitas opened in downtown Asheville in Spring 2004, I was smitten...

Im 30....seriously.

I am turning 30 today. So in the spirit of reflecting on these first 30 years of living, I am starting this blog. So, to begin - I shall update my status in life (this sounds complicated, so I will just try this in "list form."): Noah = greatest thing that ever happened to me. having a child was like an act of god, immediatly enacting a revolution on my perspective. Everyone tells you that " it is going to change everything." But I think I internalized that in a way that seemed to say ... things outside of me would change ie: schedules, sleeping, finaces, etc. Those things do change. But I did not accept that it would be ME that would go through the most profound changes. What I mean is, that the world itself has not shifted, but my view of that world (like Picasso in his Cubist period) has been transformed. It has been a traumatic shift for me, but in a beautiful way. Stop everything. "Icky Thump" by the White Stripes just came on the ipod. Sweet Jesus t...
