Where The Wild Things Are, by Maurice Sendak is one of Noah's favorite books. I confess that not only was it one of my favorite books as a child, but remains in my top 10. It is difficult to pinpoint that elusive quality that makes this children's book so captivating. Noah most enjoys the "Wild Rumpus" section, where Max and the Wild Things just go crazy for three pages worth of dancing. When we read it with him - we make drum noises and shake like "our legs were broken" (see song, "The Humpty Hump"). He just thinks that is the bees knees. "More, More!!" - he screams.
As for me, I love it because it tells the story of Max (who, due to his disobedience, was sent to bed without supper) leaving his Mom in anger, only to travel to where the Wild Things are. And while there, he is made King, and allowed to do anything he wants - including lead the "Wild Rumpus." But, in the end, he wants to return home. And when he does, he finds that his supper is waiting for him. He is loved, and forgiven. Max is, in a way, the prodigal son - which is one of my all time favorite stories from the Bible. Forgiveness is just so difficult, which I guess is what makes it just so beautiful.
